How to Keep a School Friendship Going

1. Make the most of what you have in common

So you may be wearing different uniforms next year, but the girl inside is still the same?  If you both like the same sports or hobbies, find or make clubs for those hobbies outside of school.  Maybe you can start a weekly photo club with your bestie, or you can both sign up for after school swimming lessons next year or even join the same church choir.  The best thing about this is that it leaves room for both of you to include your new school friends and you’ll already have something in common to get a new friendship going.

2. Allow your friends to change

You’ll both be experiencing things you may never have experienced before, as well as learning new things about the world and about yourself, so you can both expect to change and grow-up and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing.  If your bestie has a new hobby, starts wearing her hair different or becomes more outspoken, don’t force her to stay the same or make her feel guilty.

3. Live in and love the present

No one wants to be friends with the girl who’s always complaining or reminiscing without appreciating all the great things that are happening around her.  It’s okay to bring up great memories, but make sure you are making new ones too, with your old friends and your new classmates.  That way, when you and your bestie do get together, you’ll have a lot of cool stories to tell her and she’ll feel free to tell you hers.  You’ll be chatting for hours, just like you always have.
